An Attitude of Gratitude: The Tradition Continues at Options HS

The day before Thanksgiving, something special happens at Options High School. The lights are dimmed, the tables are dressed, and students gather shoulder-to-shoulder with their teachers and mentors for what has become one of the most beloved traditions in the building: the annual Gratitude Lunch.

Principal Bethany Barrett, now in her first year leading the school, describes the spirit of the event as simple and powerful: “It feels like a family meal. And for many of our students, this is as close to a family experience as they get.”

A Tradition That Reflects the Heart of Options HS

Although the event has evolved over the years, from staff once cooking everything by hand to today’s catered meal, its purpose remains unchanged: to create a moment of belonging, connection, and abundance. Students and staff sit together as equals, share what they’re grateful for, and enjoy a meal that, for some, is unlike anything they have access to at home.

The anticipation builds long before the food is served. Returning students tell newcomers, “Just wait.” Some ask to help set up, run lighting, or decorate. This year, the school’s ASB took the lead, delivering the welcome, offering a land acknowledgment, and guiding gratitude conversations at each table. For many students, it’s the first time they’ve stepped into a leadership role in front of the entire school.

But the moments that stay with you are the small ones that reveal just how much this meal means.

A Simple Meal, A Powerful Reminder of Care

A student piled his plate high, balancing his third slice of pie, and said with genuine excitement, “I am so excited. I haven’t had a Thanksgiving in like, two years.” Another student quietly carried three full plates through the line, one for himself and two more for four family members at home he planned to feed.

Bethany shared that the leftovers might be her favorite part: “They’re so excited to take something home. You know they’re taking a little piece of that love with them.” Staff even volunteer to deliver meals to students who can’t attend in person.

Thanks to donor support, this day is possible. You help create a moment of warmth, dignity, and belonging, something our students look forward to all year long.

Thank you for giving our Options students a seat at the table. You make this tradition not only possible, but deeply meaningful.
